Hillel Academy students sang songs at the County Courthouse in celebration of the holiday. Milwaukee County Supervisor, Chris Abele, lit the Menorah candle. The event concluded with Rabbi Lein and Mr. Abele handing out ‘gelt’ to onlookers. Other grades traveled to the Governor’s Mansion and the Wisconsin State Capital to share in the holiday spirit with Governor Scott Walker. A special poem was shared and Hillel drummers provided music. The Community-wide Festival of Lights kicked off with an outdoor Menorah lighting and parade. A Menorah composed of children’s Mitzvah notes was on colorful display. Various groups, such as Hillel Academy students, Jewish Beginnings Preschoolers, and the Friendship Circle celebrated the holiday in song.

The ceremony celebrates each student’s basic proficiency in acquiring Hebrew language skills. The students performed songs in Hebrew for their parents and relatives who attended the special event. School Principal, B. Devorah Shmotkin, congratulated each of the students as they received their own personalized and embossed prayer book. Congratulations, First Graders on this remarkable event!
